1-800-803-5775 tells you what number you called from, as presented by SIP provider Flowroute. But it also does more!
The same service is available on 1-844-700-0431, but the 1-800 number might work better with payphones.
CNAM: In addition to the number, it reads back the name from a CNAM (caller name) database lookup. Be aware that commercial CNAM databases like the one this number uses are of variable quality, and many telephone providers don't submit data to them anyway. The CNAM result may be useless ("wireless caller") or out of date, so you should take it with a grain of salt. Specifically, we use BulkVS's CNAM database.
ISUP-OLI/ANI2: It also reads back the "ISUP-OLI" or "ANI2" value. This sometimes indicates the type of the calling phone, such as "00" (standard) or "27" (payphone). ANI2 is a POTS concept that does not exactly exist in cellular or VoIP networks, so depending on the phone you call from and the specific route your call takes, this information is not always available. The presence of a non-zero ANI2 is usually a good indication that the phone you are calling from is served by a traditional TDM switch, but "not available" doesn't reliably mean anything specific. Your call may have passed through various VoIP providers or otherwise lost its ANI2 in the course of least-cost routing. Similarly, some calls, at least from cellular phones, seem to get an "00" ANI2 added somewhere along the way. These might be calls that went through a traditional mobile telephone switching office? Theories abound. The ANI2 seen on calls from the same phone is known to sometimes vary between SIP providers, I use FlowRoute. Most SIP providers don't deliver an ANI2 header at all.
Public Log: The test number has an online log (below). For privacy reasons, calls appear online only if they have a non-zero ANI2 or the caller explicitly opts in by pressing 1.
Better Reliability (?): I selected FlowRoute because some unscientific testing showed that they had the most reliable results accepting calls from payphones (based on a hodgepodge survey of a few payphones and a few inexpensive providers). Calls from "properly operating" payphones should be free. International calls should also work, although free or toll will vary.
Report a Cool Phone: After the information is read back, you can optionally leave a voice message. Document the unusual phone that you're calling from. Any payphones you report in to this line will be shared with reportapayphone.com.
